EXMAR and Seapeak through their JV (EXMAR LPG BV) are moving forward with the use of ammonia as fuel for two Midsize Gas Carriers (MGCs). The vessels will be constructed at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea.

These vessels will be the first oceangoing ships to be powered by dual-fuel ammonia engines, enabling near-zero emissions when operating on ammonia. The engines will be supplied by WINGD, and the fuel supply system by Wärtsilä Gas Solutions. As leading global transporters of ammonia, we are proud to be developing vessels with a 90% reduction in operational carbon footprint, surpassing the International Maritime Organization's emissions reduction targets. This achievement is made possible by the extensive experience of EXMAR's operational and technical teams and the collective efforts of all our project partners.

The 46,000 m³ MGCs are expected to be delivered early 2026. During the design and development phase of the vessels, operational safety is top priority. A risk-based design appraisal conducted by Lloyds Register, in collaboration with input from experienced crews and approved by the Flag State (Belgium), is crucial in the process and will continue to guide further design enhancements. As the global leader in the maritime transportation of ammonia and LPG and the transformation of gasses, EXMAR boasts a long-standing tradition of innovation in new ship designs, including the world's first floating infrastructure platforms. With over four decades of expertise in handling ammonia cargoes, the company and its dedicated seafarers are confident in their ability to navigate safely and successfully using this new zero-carbon shipping fuel.
